I'm an aunt!!!!!
Anywho....I'd post pictures except my in-laws are living in the stone age and don't have a digital camera**. Thus, I will have to wait (and you too!) until they get the photos developed and scanned in.
*I think that's how it's spelled, Elsie was so out of it she could barely remember what the name was... it sounds like it's either Amelia or Amalia--Elsie kept spelling it with the A, but kept pronouncing it like it was an E...so I guess I'll just have to wait until the email finally arrives showing how it is correctly spelled.
**They do too have a digital camera. Elsie just refuses to use it because she claims it's a cheap piece of crap. Yes, that's right, when you buy the "Buy this digital camera, get a printer for free!" deal, it's the camera that's a piece of crap instead of the printer.)
Poor Busted Ass Saturn
I called in sick because of a migraine (luckily, my symptoms of a migraine usually are just a sensitivity to light (and my eyes hurt--like it hurts to keep them open, I have to close them...and preferably be laying down) and loud noises, with a killer headache and sleep usually fixes it right up). [Aside] odd...some people would say those are the symptoms of a hang over...but I was not hungover...actually, i don't think i've ever been hung over...but that's probably because i tend not to get smashed off my ass [/Aside]. After I call in, I decide I should go get some pain killers. Right before I leave to go to the store, I say to myself "Self go mail off the baby package." I grab the baby package, get out the door and then drive to the UPS store. I mail off said package. I get back to my car. I turn the key. Click. "NO NO NO!" Turn the key again. Click. "DAMMIT"
I call Shawn. He says "Call AAA" so I do. Their service isn't working--it keeps telling me to hang up and call the number on my card. I call Shawn back and explain what just happened. So he leaves work to come to the UPS store to jump start the battery. It won't jump start. So, we take the battery out of the car and drive it to Sears to get a new battery. Bad news: The battery is fine. Shit. So we drive back to the car, replace the battery and call AAA again. (Keep in mind that by this time I'm a cranky whore-bitch and am about ready to cry, or to lay down in the middle of the parking lot and die). This time the service works (thank God! I was about to cry, or lay down in the middle of the parking lot and die). They say someone will be out in an hour to tow the car. An hour comes, an hour goes...the tow truck shop calls back to say the tow truck is running a little behind and "A truck will be there in 15minutes, half an hour." Another hour later I call the tow truck company. The guy tells me that there will definitely be a tow truck out there soon. Half an hour later the truck shows up. That's right, we waited outside for 3 hours. Thankfully I found old pain meds in my purse somewhere around hour one so the killer headache was gone, and laying on a street bench by the bookstore in the shade at least got my eyes to stop hurting, but I was still beat.
We finally got home around 3 and both crashed for a nap. Now, I feel a lot better...Aside from the fact that I have to get up early to go catch the bus to make it to work tomorrow.

Proactiv
My biggest problem was the fact that the cleanser and the lotion dried out my skin too much. Plus, I swear that Benzoyl Peroxide doesn't prevent any zits (for me). I think this is why I liked the refining mask so much--it had salicylic acid. And using the cleanser and lotion once every 3 days just wasn't helping....at all. Plus, it makes the crap last forever...I mean seriously, they had me on a special plan that I would get a new shipment of stuff once every 6 months...I don't think I used half the product by the time they were supposed to send me a new shipment.
So, I canceled my 'subscription' [Aside] That's another thing, I hated this "we'll ship you the stuff every month, even if you don't need it!" attitude--Dude, if I like your product I'll get it again, but if it's just so-so, then no, I won't. Deal with it. [/Aside] The first time I called, the guy convinced me to just wash my face less frequently, and they'd ship me a new set of the product after 6 months. I got to the time when they were supposed to send another shipment and I called them back and was like "dude, haven't finished the first set you sent--it dries out my skin too much, and it's causing me to break out more than it's preventing breakouts." And this is when the salesguy brings up the fact that they have special "for sensitive skin" stuff. With Salicylic Acid. But by then I was done. I'm sorry, that's it. You had your chance to give me other stuff, you didn't. You failed, Proactiv. You failed!
So, would I suggest it? No. But that doesn't mean that it hasn't worked well for other people. In fact, the only reason I tried it was because it got glowing reviews from two of my friends, and none of my other friends had tried it and I figured "what have I got to lose?" So, I guess what I'm trying to say is "figure out what works better for you, Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid. If it's Benzoyl, then get Proactiv, but if you prefer Salicylic, then don't bother blowing your money on Proactiv, get some Noxzema Microbead cleanser instead."
Harry Potter 5 (the movie)
The biggest let down for movie 6: No more Gary Oldman.
The best thing about movie 6: Tons more Alan Rickman. At least there should be. And if there isn't, I'm going to cry.
Harry Potter 7 (the book)
[Aside] I always did think that was funny...the bible thumpers loved Narnia which is a story about witchcraft and insane worlds that couldn't possibly exist where the animals talk and there are centaurs, but they hated Harry Potter which is a story about wizardry and insane worlds that couldn't possibly exist where the animals can talk (sometimes) and there are centaurs....hmm, i'm not really seeing the difference here...besides, and more importantly, they're both about good vs. evil, sacrificing for what's important, and learning about what really matters. [/Aside]
[Aside] Also, they need to do the epilogue at the very end of the movie...like how they finished all three Pirates movies--there's a definite end to the book, and the epilogue is just extra. Thus, i think it would be cool to have it at the end of the credits instead of just before the credits. [/Aside]
Anyhow, I would recommend reading this book. Unfortunately you'll have to read the other 6 first. (BTW, the third book is the best, in my opinion, and the 5th and 6th are probably my least favorite...but then, that's because they kinda moosh into one book for me).

TV Fall Lineup
TheCW: The bastard child of the WB and UPN. They've gone downhill. They canceled Veronica Mars. BOOOO! but they are bringing back Beauty and the Geek in the 8pm time slot on Tuesdays. The only bad thing about this is that it makes such a wonderful Summer show...I don't know how it will hold up against shows like House and Dancing with the Stars .
Fox: Fox has been playing around with the Sunday night lineup for a while--back in the day it was the Simpsons, King of the Hill and some other shows. Last year it was Simpsons, random sitcom, The Family Guy, American Dad. This year King of the Hill is replacing the random sitcom.
Wednesdays at 7pm will be the airing of the new sitcom Back to You starring Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) and Patricia Heaton (Deb from What About Raymond). The commercials airing on Fox make it watchable, but the extended commercial on the website doesn't. So, I don't know if we'll ever watch this...maybe.
Tuesdays brings the new show New Amsterdam at 7 and then House at 8. I don't know if we'll watch New Amsterdam. Though I almost want to watch the show, and Moonlight, and whatever the other one is that's the same premise and see which one is better. Somehow, I think all three will be canceled after 6 episodes, though.
Thursdays will have the new Gordon Ramsay show Kitchen Nightmares at 8. It looks like Fox is looking to capitalize on the viewership of Hell's Kitchen. Little do they realize that the whole reason for watching Hell's Kitchen is because nothing else is on Monday nights during the summer. Not so with Thursdays during the fall (Grey's Anatomy, The Office/Scrubs, CSI). We usually record CSI and The Office, so the only way we're going to see this show is if one of the aforementioned shows is a repeat.
ABC: The least watched network in this house. As in, the only time we watch it is when Girl's night is being hosted over here. As such, they are bringing back the Bachelor in the Monday at 9 timeslot (which just sucks for girl's night). They are also bringing back their big hits--Dancing with the Stars, Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, Men in Trees, and Desperate Housewives. Lost will begin sometime mid season.
NBC: This used to be right up there with ABC for least watched Network in this house, but then Heroes happened. Now, we have Heroes night at our house...which does put a damper on girl's night as Heroes is on right before the Bachelor.
Mondays will kick off at 7pm with the new show Chuck, which we'll probably watch a few episodes, followed by Heroes, which is ultimately followed by Journeyman (this is one of the shows I was talking about with the whole time travel/living forever thing...my guess is we won't like it).
Tuesdays sees the return of The Biggest Loser as hosted by the chic that plays Sammi on Days of Our Lives. We won't watch it, but I bet my mom will.
Wednesdays will have the first airing of Deal or No Deal (at 7), and the Bionic Woman (at 8). The only reason to mention Bionic Woman is because Isiah Washington who was fired from Grey's Anatomy will be making some guest appearances...if that isn't an indication of how well that show will do, I don't know what is.
Thursdays brings back the winning line up of My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, The Office, Scrubs and ER (dude, this show has been on FOREVER...when will it leave?!?!?!?).
Fridays will star the second airing of Deal or No Deal, and Friday Night Lights (which I think was only renewed by a hair).
CBS: This is by far the network we watch most.
Mondays will have the returning show How I Met Your Mother (Watch this show if you haven't done so already!), the new show Big Bang, and then Two and a Half Men, the Rules of Engagement and CSI: Miami (oh red-headed step child of CBS that is David Caruso, how much do I hate you?...We have, in the past recorded this show...I'm not sure if we will this year.)
Tuesdays are pretty tame with the only show worth watching (maybe) of NCIS at 7.
Wednesdays see the return of Criminal Minds (also, watch this show) at 8 and CSI: New York at 9.
Thursdays are a hit with Survivor: China at 7, CSI at 8, and Without a Trace (apparently it didn't do so well on Sunday nights).
Fridays have the new show, Moonlight (about a guy that just won't die), at 8 and Numbers returning in the 9 o'clock timeslot.
The Amazing Race will return mid-season, but no word yet on if it will air on Sundays (boo) or in the Survivor timeslot in the off season (yay!).
Our recording schedule will look something like this:
Sunday: Fox Line Up (7-9)
Monday: Chuck (NBC: 7), Heroes (NBC: 8), Journeyman (NBC: 9), CBS Line Up (7-10)
Tuesday: New Amsterdam (Fox: 7), Beauty and the Geek (CW: 8), House (Fox: 8)
Wednesday: Back to You (Fox: 7), Criminal Minds (CBS: 8), CSI: NY (CBS: 9)
Thursday: Survivor (CBS: 7), CSI (CBS: 8), The Office (NBC: 8), Kitchen Nightmares (Fox: 8)
Friday: Moonlight (CBS: 8), Numbers (CBS: 9)
Yes, I watch entirely too much TV...but as I said, it's all recorded, so it's more like I just don't do any housework...Yay for living in slovenly filth!

Garden pictures--

(These photos, as with all the previous photos, are edited with the Picture Viewer in Vista. These ones, unlike the Quazi photos, are generally heavily tweaked on the brightness, and tint scales; and slightly tweaked on the contrast, saturation, and color temperature scales. The red flowers picture is the only one that has been cropped from the original. I think the red flowers is also the only one where a flash wasn't used.)

I feel like SUCH A DORK!
I bought the onesies to go with the pants. And, because I am a dork, I bought "Newborn" size pants, and "0-3" size onesies. Now then, I know most of you that read this blog haven't had children (nor have I for that matter). But, I am here to tell you that Newborn is not the same size as 0-3. Nor do 0-3 size clothes necessarily fit wee-babies. That is, even though the size thingy says 0-3 months, what they really mean to say is "if the baby weighs less than 8 pounds at birth, you'll be waiting about 2-3 weeks before they'll fit into these clothes."
Yeah, apparently babies lose weight right after they are born and it takes approximately 2 weeks until they are at "birth weight". Who knew?
But anyhow, this pretty much means that if it were up to me to clothe this kid, it would be topless for the first 2-3 weeks of life and then bottomless for the next couple months. Aside from the fact that the baby is going to be born at the beginning of August. It probably doesn't even NEED pants for the first 2 weeks. Damn.
[Aside]: At least I try. Shawn claims that if we ever have kids, he will go out and buy some fabric for like $1.99 a yard and then go and make the kid clothes. Of course, the "making the kid clothes" really means cut out squares, hem, make head hole, hem, put on baby, tie shoelace under arms. You can probably get at least 3 outfits per yard using this technique. He refers to these clothes as "Jesus wear". Be glad I didn't let him make any of these tunics for the baby. [/Aside]
So, WeeBaby: I'm sorry your aunt is such a dork. I promise I'll try to get my shit together. With any luck, the stuff we got you will be there before you're born.

Quazabutt

(these were all 'edited' with the Vista picture viewer thing. I say 'edited' because I really didn't edit them. I think I saved a copy of the original and tweaked ONE thing slightly off "center" so it would save the picture at a whopping 750k instead of the original 1.2M...So, in other words, aside from the undersaturated picture, these are in essence, "unedited").

Breed Bans
At one point in his blog, he mentions the whole "seeing some 100-lb woman walk around with a 'death' dog that she can't control because she doesn't have enough strength to do so" thing. Which...sure, but at the same time, it sounds like he really should be advocating dog SIZE bans. Any dog that weighs 60 lbs or more is going to be able to drag a 100-lb person wherever it wants to go. Just because it can. And any dog can bite, maul, or kill.
(Disclaimer: Yes I realize this is a pro-pit bull site; I'm using it, however, to prove that all dogs bite--NOT that pit bulls don't bite.)
(Other Disclaimer: I play devil's advocate--I don't want a pit bull, or even a pit-bull looking dog. This has nothing to do with the breed's reputation, or personality but with the fact that I think the dogs are ugly. That's not to say that I wouldn't get a pit bull mix--but it would have to be cuter. And generally, 'cuter' means 'more hound like face'...so less boxy head, more elongated snout.)
However, I do advocate people being given a test before they get a dog to see what type of dog they're qualified to own (currently there are tests used to make sure that if you're a couch potato you don't get a dog that will require a 3 mile jog daily). And I do advocate bite rules and vicious dog laws. But a over-all breed ban? not so much. And as I've said before, get yer damn pets fixed!
This is very similar to the Columbine thing--Was it the music, the clothes or the individual? Me? I think it's the individual.

No TV! NOOOOOOOO
Of course this would be the DAY AFTER SHAWN SOLD THE OLD BOX TO JAMIE!
He's trying to fix it, but I have a feeling that it didn't record the So You Think You Can Dance results show. meh. I'll just read about it on Television Without Pity tomorrow.
OH, and I'm pissed at AOL. Because their HIQ-viewer doesn't support Vista 64-bit because they are stupid. How the HELL am I supposed to watch videos of Histeria if they go about and deny me that opportunity.
And in case you were wondering, yes, I'm still Hyper Link Happy. By the way, have to seen the "Will It Blend?" Videos? Pretty nifty.

But this may have just got him to actually read my blog (look up: doubtful) so he can at least know what I'm writing about and tell me when I've overstepped my bounds.

Hyperlink Happy
Hyper link #2: Slate's report about the fad of Crocs. Now then, I went to school in Boulder, the birthplace of the Crocs, and even then, they weren't all THAT popular amongst the college set...they seemed to be used more as lounge shoes than real shoes...similar to slippers, really. Kerstin was the first person I knew to wear Crocs as actual shoes, but that's alright Kerstin was one of those super artsy people--seriously, the girl could take some damn fine pictures. Plus, her house was awesome (it was an old barn that was converted into a house--the hot water lines ran under the cement floor and acted as a heater), and she had two Bouvier des Flandres dogs named Lucy and Linus. As an aside, she was a workout nut--if you Google her, you'll find that she does lots of biking and triathlons. Anyhow, back to my point. My point is, that in Boulder, the shoes weren't worn as shoes. They were much more popular elsewhere in the state...like in Parker, where my in-laws have become converts to the Croc shoe...seriously, it really is almost a religion to them. MIL has like 4 different pairs of the shoes, and FIL has at least 2 pairs--one of which is the business croc. That's right, the business croc. You can call it what you want. As for me, I'll still call it ugly. Also, as the Slate article points out, the shoe itself isn't great for your feet because of minimal support--besides, I think I'd rather get a pair of Danskos.
Hyper link #3: A man was shot and killed at the Denver, Colorado capital. Apparently the crazy walked in and claimed he was the emperor and he was going to take over the state government. The fact that this happened didn't surprise me, the fact that it made the news on the BBC did.
Hyper link #4: Meanwhile, the biggest news in Austin is that the Lake is reopening. Well, that and the fact that the City Manager is fed up with people saying she's a nepotistic fool, so she's taking her toys and leaving (aka retiring).
ETA: Hyper link #5: I really like this Linux commercial. I mean, really. A lot.

Bully Breeds
In the last paragraph, one of the neighbors says "I think the dog was protecting the babies." but then goes on to negate that by saying he doesn't understand how people could own vicious dogs (keeping in mind that so far, there's no proof the dog was ever vicious before...so really, what he means is '...how could people own vicious dog breeds?').
My issues with this:
1. replace "Grandma and Aunt" with "Burglar and Child Molester". Do you think the dog would be given all this post-humus shit? No, it probably would have gotten a freaking medal.
2. Pit Bulls are generally bred to be suspicious of strangers and protective of their family.
3. In the early 1900's, Pit Bulls were sometimes used as babysitters for the children of the rich and famous. Mostly because they mauled people that got close to the kids (unless the pit knew the person...as in that person had to be around the pit bull a couple times a week). Hey, it made sure your kid was safe from kidnappers and therefore the inevitable ransom. Of course, breeding a dog to have a high tolerance of pain is going to make it a good companion for kids and a good fighter.
Then there was this follow up article. Wait, the Great-Grandma and Aunt were actually the Grandma and Cousin to the BABYSITTER?
Issues (aside from apparently there are people not even related to the babies entering the house):
1. The Aunt/Cousin lady says she stabbed the dog multiple times with a knife, but it still attacked her grandma...Bullys (way back in the day) were bred to withstand vast amounts of pain, and to stick to whatever they were doing even if it meant they were going to die. This is why stabbing, shooting, and pepper spraying these dogs usually doesn't stop them (which, is admittedly, probably bad...and this is part of how they get their bad rap). At the same time, German Shepards, Malinois, and Mastiffs exhibit this same trait of being able to withstand pain to get the job done. This, of course, isn't accounting for the little dogs--which usually don't do as much damage to people, but man, some of them are very aggressive and vicious.
2. The cops show up and shoot the dog once. It still was acting aggressively and so they shot it again, killing it. I'm sorry...but I think if I was shot by the cops I'd probably be acting pretty aggressively too.
3. The rule is that you have to keep your dog penned when it's at home? Wow...what a great way to make sure your dog is more willing to bite ANYONE (including the children in the house). "Yes yes, I've got this brilliant idea--I don't want my dog to bite anyone, so I shall keep it away from people unless absolutely necessary. And then I'll act all surprised when it's suspicious of all people and finally snaps and bites someone!"
4. I absolutely agree with the spaying and neutering. So, in the words of Bob Barker, "please remember to spay and neuter your pets!"

What we talk about while drinking Beer
-What you will find doing field work (uh...personal massagers for women)
-What type of underwear the sorority intern was wearing today (g-string)
-The fact that Johnny can't say "Breast Pump". Okay, he can, but you have to give him 4 beers first.
-That Colleen asked our other intern if he knew the guy that went and chopped his girlfriend to bits then barbequed her (and this is the girl that gets upset when I tell her my cat killed a mouse). 1--what did she want the intern to answer? "Oh yeah! he was my best friend!" and 2--Matt pointed out that this may speak more to what Colleen thinks our intern is like than anything...well, to be fair, the intern is pretty quiet.
-And finally. The fact that someone took down Matt's Texas Road map. Of course he's not upset that it was replaced with another state's road map, he's just upset that he doesn't have his original Texas road map....Never fear, he went to the Chevron and got a new one.

Dooce made me do it
Edited with the crappy editor that comes with Windows Vista. The most annoying part is that you can't save the pictures at a size similar to how they were taken...I took the pictures, they were approximately 1.2M, now they are like 200K. woo. Oh yeah, I used Shawn's digital SLR...ain't no way I can get pictures like this with a point and shoot.

Baby YAM is here!
Friday, July 06, 2007
Anyhow.
Oh. My. God. I think I may have to do this next time someone goes on vacation.
Also, Miss Sarah still has not sent pictures of Yam. And yet her myspace friends all have pictures up of said baby, but they are mean and have their profiles set to private so I cannot see Yam. le sigh.

Focus on the Family....Bleggggth
After having seen movies, I will occasionally read the reviews on Focus on the Family's sister site, Plugged in Online. I actually know people who refuse to watch movies unless they are given the green light by Plugged In. And these people are adults. Adults who should be able to tell the difference between right and wrong, even if a movie glorifies what is wrong. I realize that the main thing was probably more of a "I don't want to give my money to a movie that is going to have things in it I fundamentally disagree with." In which case, you shouldn't go to the movies. Ever. Anyhow, I used to disagree with the Plugged In reviews a lot-but then they went and got all politic about things so they didn't just outright say "if you go to this movie you are supporting the devil" like they used to. So now, I gotta read the review in order to see if they think it's a bad movie or a good movie.
Anyhow, I've gone and digressed again. But, the point of this blog was that we went and saw "Knocked Up" and it was a funny movie (Crude, sure. Funny, absolutely). So, because of all the drug use and premarital sex, I figured that the review would be scathing. Which, I suppose it probably is. But my favorite part? where they mention that Debbie has admitted to having 3 red bulls in 15 minutes under the "drug and alcohol content". HAHAHHA, what would these people do if they knew there were "worse" energy drinks on the market?

Things that annoy me 2
Sometimes I totally understand and agree with the NIMBYs--you know, like when it comes to landfills, sewage treatment plants, concrete plants, mining operations, nuclear power plants, etc.
However, if you are a NIMBY because you don't want a skate park (or a regular park) put within viewing distance of your house, you are an idiot. Same goes for any sort of road sign or other thing that may eventually save your life or the life of someone you care about. And I'm all for keeping streams and creeks as natural as can be, but if you've gone and bought a house that backs up to a creek, and then demand that the government do something to protect you from flooding, don't be offended when they say the options are to widen the creek (and channelize it) or to build a dam. If you want the homeless off the streets, you're going to have to find a place to put them (or you could hope for a serial killer that only goes after the domicile-ly challenged), and it just may be a large homeless shelter close to your house. Same goes for animal shelters.
AND for the love of God, stop complaining about how you want all the wildlife around your house, except for, you know, the wolves, the bears, the mountain lions, the prairie dogs, the coyotes, the snakes, the vultures, the raccoons, the possums, the porcupines, the rats, the mice, and the rabbits (in case you couldn't tell, this basically leaves birds that look 'pretty', armadillos (if you're in Texas), and cloven hoofed animals).

Updates
1. I changed my blogger picture and the blurb about me. Because my mom said I had to change the picture to be one of me with short hair, and no glasses. This is only because otherwise the picture didn't look like "me". Thanks, Mom.
2. Made the apple pie cheesecake thing and it's pretty freaking tasty.
3. The pants from JCrew and Old Navy arrived. They were both too big. The Old Navy one I can alter to fit better, but I had to send back the JCrew one for an exchange (damn). The worst part about it is that Dani and I went to the actual JCrew store to look at some dress she wanted, which is absolutely gorgeous and a size 4 in that fits fine. Go figure.
4. Dani's leaving today, in all, we did the InnerSpace Caverns, the Candle Factory, the Ikea, found some longhorns to take pictures of (at the Westinghouse building actually), made Pam's cheesecake, went to the natural gardener, when to Barton Square Mall, watched the Bats, looked at the loons on 6th street (which, by the way, there's a Leslie wannabe down there now. it was really sad...especially since the guy was wearing less than Leslie wears.), and we ate at Bess Bistro (no sightings of Sandra Bullock, and Shawn felt under-dressed in shorts and a T-shirt. Also, on their lunch menu they have BLTs!).

Because my life is boring...
So, yesterday, Gabe (whose wife is pregnant...for the third time in....2.5 years) asked Shawn and Joel for boy name ideas. The only caveats? That it had to be a biblical name, and it couldn't be the "normal" names (Matthew, David, John, Aaron, etc.). Here is a list of the names they suggested:
Caine
Lucifer
Herod
Judas
Hezekiah
Jedidiah
Ezekiel
I simply said that Shawn forgot about Mishach, Shadrach, and Abednego (who, we all know is Gumby's cousin)

The bitch about getting older
To illustrate this point: I decided to order clothes online yesterday. I decided to buy pants. The last time I did this, I just went for the smallest size that Eddie Bauer had (2), and actually, it was still too large. However, when I ordered pants from LL Bean, I got a size larger (4), which also happened to be the smallest size they had, and they fit fine. So then, what sizes do you get at Old Navy and JCrew? I decided to use the sizing charts. Oh the sizing charts. And when looking at the sizing charts, it was then that I realized I was still using my measurements from high school. And I thought to myself, "wouldn't it be grand to get my measurements now?" And so, I went and got out some string and the tape measure. And what I learned: I've gotten 1.5" larger everywhere (well, except for inseam...I stopped growing taller by the time I was a senior). And this, of course, puts me squarely between sizes. DAMN.
But, on the plus side, that means my boobs are bigger.

On Monday
This is what 7:30 am looks like:
*Do not be fooled. I do not HAVE to go to the thing--it's just that I want to make sure that everything is going smoothly at the training...mostly because if it doesn't, then I'll be the one getting blamed**. Even though the computers have been around longer than the entirety of Survivor, and over half of them don't work (at all), and it's at the freaking Police Academy, where there are fire drills, and sirens, and live gun fire, I will still get blamed if it isn't a good training. Yeah, this should be great.
What I wanted to do to the computers:
**Yes, I was put in charge of planning a training that I am not going to be attending...which of course, just makes me a bitter old woman because I don't CARE how the training turns out, but then I realize that I DO care, if not only because if it goes poorly, then I will be in the proverbial dog house with my supervisor. Also, we have a person that we hired specifically for "event planning", thus I don't know why I was ever put in charge in the first place.
What? just because I'll be in the dog house doesn't mean that it can't look awesome:
Disclaimer: Don't listen to me. I just feel like being whiny tonight for some reason. It's probably because I'm hungry.

No, you can't come inside.
Oh Happy Day...and other stuff.
2. Dani is coming to visit soon (WEEEEE!!!!!!) and I'm excited...In case you couldn't tell. Anyhow, I've been looking at things to do around town, and here's a list of things that I found:
a) BatCon
b) Innerspace Caverns (and Candle Factory)
c) Bob Bullock History Museum
d) Capital building
e) Hill Country Flyer
f) outlet mall in Round Rock (and Ikea)
g) outlet mall in San Marcos (and glass blowing factory)
h) Ghost Town Tour and/or 6th Street
i) SeaWorld in San Antonio and Alamo/Riverwalk
j) Bess Bistro (mom says we have to go there)
k) looking for a peach stand
l) Bull Creek park at Lakewood, and a drive down Spicewood Springs road (what? i'm a dork)
m) Department Picnic
n) 1st Chinese Bar-b-que
o) Zen restaurant (dad says we have to)
hmmm....did I leave anything out?
3. I have decided that Miss Sarah will have her baby on July 1. And Christina will have her baby on August 1 (or 2). This is because so far this year, everyone's babies have been born on the 1st or 2nd...which, really when you look at "everyone" I mean John's baby and Mrs. Poochie's baby.
4. I went walking for an hour today, and racked up a total of 5 miles over the entire day because I rule.
5. The bathroom is almost done. The vanity and sink are in. Now we just have to saw the edge of one drawer, shorten another and put everything back in place. Easy right?

just desserts
So then, tomorrow's goal: Get the recipe from Pam, the cheesecake goddess (actually, I could probably call her the domestic cooking goddess extraordinaire as I've loved every recipe she's ever made).

Pirates
However, I think i'm going to be disappointed by Ocean's 13. Mostly because everyone says it's good, so now I'll get my hopes up. Only to have them dashed later. bah.

Baby Calison...No, that's not her real name.
Mr. and Mrs. Poochie's Baby was born on Friday June 1st at like 5:30 am. Welcome to the world, baby!

uh, yeah...that's mine
I think I turned bright red.
Then I looked down.
My shirt had slid down and to the side a little. And I am now, quite possibly showing off my wonderfully lovely nappy old white bra-ed right breast. I only say "quite possibly" because I don't know what can be seen from in front of me--I only know that from me looking down, and from where Karol was standing (to the left of me) that it was quite obvious that my boob was showing.
And thus, I had been talking with intern Charlie and Todd and John for God knows how long with my right boob showing. Yeah...I was red. well, everyone else had a good laugh. Sigh.

Other News
AND Shawn's dad was laid off. Stupid companies and their stupid laying off people a few years before retirement (in this case, four). It's just like my uncle--he was laid off a few months ago and it was totally the same situation. Welcome to the Suck.
I.V. is the Sylar of animals.

A Cat's Best Friend
9am - Noon: Strappy enjoys watching what goes on outside. Sometimes he really wishes he could go out whenever he wanted. Also, he blends in with the rug (look for the red strap)
1pm: Watching the world go by can make a Cat Toy thirsty.
**You may have noticed that Strappy has a bit o' the Duct Tape on him...That's because Strappy was originally part of a different cat toy and he was brutally riped off by an angry I.V. But then she started carrying around all the various little straps, so I duct taped them together into one toy. Plus, now we don't find a piece here, a piece there, etc.

Other things that are fun
Another thing I decided I like--going out with friends to sixth street (or in this case, people I barely know that work with Shawn). yep. especially if you go somewhere where you can talk...for example, sitting in front of the TV at Logan's is not a good place to talk to people as the stupid speakers are blaring in your ear. By the way, those people know their amp goes to 11, and always set it at that level. DAMN YOU!!!! However, the Library is fun. Though they put too much alcohol in your drink (wait, what am I saying? I'm complaining about a bar putting too much alcohol in an alcoholic drink? weird).
Things that are not fun: replacing a toilet when your floor is concrete and you're using a new fangled design that requires you to drill holes in your floor and then use concrete anchors. On the plus side: it only took us 2 days to get the toilet in. Though I claim we could have done it in one--but we had to leave to go do the bar crawl as mentioned above.
Also, I like Heroes. And Criminal Minds. Season Finale's are within the next week for both. Watch them.
My Austin
Alison's friend, Janet, did this on her blog, and I haven't blogged in a while (though I promise I'll try to get back on a regular blogging schedule).
My Austin, TX
Age: 25
Occupation: Watershed Engineering
I lived there for: 2.5 years
I lived there because: My husband got a job before I did. Well, that's how the cookie crumbles.
My neighborhood: Anderson Mill
My favorite restaurant: The Melting Pot
If you go to this restaurant, be sure to order: Swiss Cheese fondue...it comes with Apples!
My favorite museum: Ha ha, museum, that's funny. I haven't been to any of the museums down here...Though I did finally go to the capital building last week.
My favorite tourist destination: mmmm....BatCon
Best insider spot: insider spot for what? music (uh...Emo's?)? bar (Gingerman's)? bikes (9th street trails)? pizza (south side flying pizza)? coffee shop (Austin Java)? Dog park (Bull Creek)?
My favorite area: I like hanging out downtown by the river.
Best place to go shopping: I like Barton Square Mall the best.
When you visit, don’t forget to pack: hot weather clothes and yet, a jacket.
The one local cuisine you should try when you’re in town is: Barbeque from Rudy's, or the Salt Lick
The best way to get around: If you're downtown--Walk.
If I had to describe this city in one word, it would be: un-Texan.
I tell my friends to stay at: Usually, they stay with us...otherwise I say the hotel down the street from our house.
The one thing most outsiders don’t know about this city is: Largest Mexican Free-tail urban bat colony lives under Congress Bridge.
They say “Virginia is for lovers.” So fill in the blank: Austin is for music nuts...and for people that like doing bar crawls...and for people who like bats.

Movie in the Park
It's Employee Appreciation week for City of Austin employees. That means we get stuff (aka a free lunch, a free breakfast, a free movie, a free picnic). I have decided that my favorite part is Movie night at Zilker Park. There is nothing more fun than sitting on a hillside on a nice night watching a movie with your friends. Okay, maybe there are things that are more fun, but movie night at the park is definitely in the top 5.

Man, it's been forever!
Anyhow, I think today is the day that Christina was supposed to go to get her ultrasound done. I hope i find out from her and/or Nathan about how it went before I hear about it from Elsie...but that's because I've got this thing where if it's your news, I want to hear about it from you, not from some third party. But maybe that's just me.

What's a Title?
We had happy hour at Gingerman's. You should go because it is awesome.
Want to know something funny? 101x plays songs that are non-censored (okay, they will censor out the really bad words, but "Goddamn" is fair, as is "Ass Crack"), and KissFM censors them...I think they're trying to make me feel bad about cussing when I sing along with the songs. IT'S FALLOUT BOY, COME ON! the average age of their fans is 12!
And you should read all the stuff about American Idol and their fund-raising on Reality Blurred (link in my favorite links to the right)

Stupid Williamson County Cops
I would have gone and gotten the light bulb so I could fix my brake light, but it was quota day and we passed at least 3 cops getting into the neighborhood. We didn't want to press our luck so we came home instead. Of course the light won't get fixed until the weekend though...Watch, I'll get pulled over by the same cop for the same brake light violation tomorrow.

Short Hair, Day 1
Saturday, April 21, 2007
Tell me I look good.
I finally went and donated my hair...This is the shortest it's been since I was 8. And the last time I had bangs was when I was 15...the only bad part is that I think Miss Sarah currently has the same hairstyle and so we'll look the same from the back. Also, this now officially means that Shawn has longer hair than I do. :)

Oh...My....God! :::Stabs fork in eye::::
This training is on the same level as the one day in physics class...the day the teacher decided that he had to find the precise center of gravity for a 2x4 and instead of just getting it to kinda balance and saying "well kids, you have the idea," he spent about three quarters of the class time refining the balancing of said 2x4. About 5 minutes before the end of class, one of the students stood up and yelled "why don't you actually do some teaching or something?!?!?" before running out of the classroom screaming (and, in light of the VT thing, I'm just really glad he didn't have a gun).
But this training...same thing basically. The guy will get done with something about 15 minutes early and then he spends the next 20 minutes talking about how great it is that we're done 15 minutes early. Then he looks at the clock and says "my, look at the time! Okay everyone, let's cut our break from 15 minutes down to 10 minutes so we can get back on schedule." yeah, it sucks.
We did go to the NI company picnic on saturday. It was cold. And windy. Which made it even colder. We only stayed for about 2 hours. So, in other words, we hung around until after dinner then we beat a hasty retreat because we were frozen people-sickles.
Then we went hiking with Matt and Ross on Sunday. It was a little more than 7 miles. Good thing it was down hill because my legs started hurting at about mile 6. We then went and ate at the Shady Grove. Shawn says that he likes Austin Java better. At least the Shady Grove did well in making sure that his hamburger was done correctly (medium well, no pickles, no onions, no mustard--you'd be surprised how many places screw this up...especially the mustard). They did poorly in making sure the soda machine had enough syrup, the fact that they added fries to Shawn's order even though he didn't ask for them (and they charged us for it). But we didn't complain because the waitress forgot to add our drinks to the bill so they ended up being free. yay for free drinks!

13th
Let's see...nothing all that exciting has been happening to me. Work has been slow, but it all of the sudden picked up yesterday afternoon and today (I didn't get to play on the internet once--not even to check my email!). Tomorrow is the National Instruments Company picnic...so that will be...fun? I don't know. It seems like we go to these things to get the food, but then we have to hang out to see the fireworks.
On Sunday we may go hiking with my coworkers along the Barton Springs greenbelt. We've never really been though we do hike from Spyglass Road to Zilker Park because I do horribly with parking when there are lots of cars, thus it's just easier to walk a mile and a half...each way. God I'm such a dork.

Red letter day
when I was leaving work, I realized that Gary was driving right behind me, and behind him was Jonathan (they were going to the YMCA). Then, I decided to take Duval home instead of staying on 183, so I saw Miss Sarah out walking the dogs and then (!!!) at the light, I saw Shawn riding his bike home. Yep, these are the things that make me happy.
RED LETTER! YES!

New Catchphrases of the week
Oops, I digress, again!!!
The catch phrases, right!
Catchphrase one: "Cat-popsickle-stick?" for when someone is asking a question that makes no sense
Catchphrase two: "You're not listening. That's okay." for when someone isn't listening. Duh. But this one at least has a funny story associated with it: back in CO, Shawn and I went to dinner with my family, and dad was telling a story about how he met someone famous when he was in Vegas (some husband and wife who are really good poker players). and then my sister, who hasn't been paying attention, is like "who were the people you met in Vegas?h" and dad turns to her and says "You're not listening, that's okay." The best part: she continues to not listen and does the same thing like 2 minutes later. And then again the next night...another 2 times. Okay, maybe it's not as funny to you as it is to me. psh.
Do you have a Nathan?
Usually the dinner goes something like this:
Mom straining to come up with some question to ask the son in law where he actually carries on some banter as opposed to giving a one syllable answer. Usually, the son in law gets a look on his face where he's not sure if Mom is asking him a question that she wants an answer for, or if it's more of a rhetorical thing. Mom feeling that he's making fun of her, or intentionally not answering because he doesn't like her (this is what the moms perceive--Shawn does like my parents, he thinks they're a little crazy sometimes, but he likes them. I get the feeling that this is probably the case with Nathan as well--you gotta keep in mind that these guys have not lived with their in laws as long as their respective wives have.). Dad doesn't talk much, or ask any questions (actually, my dad will tell stories during dinner if so persuaded, but I don't think I've ever heard more than a "please pass the peas" from Bob). The daughters will talk to the Moms, but that's about it. And occasionally they do the horrible, horrible thing of answering for their husbands (aka son in law) (usually at the point when they think said husbands are going to make asses of themselves). And the sister in law barely says anything. This of course means that most of the dinner conversation ends up coming from the Mothers, and it's usually pretty one-sided. Which they may or may not resent. In anycase, my point is that Shawn is the Nathan in our family.
So, it may be weird, or it may be odd, but at least it's the same between the two families. Which, in and of, itself is odd--that two such different families could be so similar. I almost want to put Nathan and my Mom together and see what happens, maybe it's just that Nathan's more like my family, and she and Nathan would get along swimmingly. I don't know, but it is an interesting thought.

dun dun dun
But on a side note, it's technically NOT for me...they have my maiden name instead of my married name. Stupid County people, all going off of voter registration instead of driver's license records.
the past
This of course brings up the memory of when we made our website for OUR wedding...Shawn's mom thought we should have put down our address so people could mail wedding gifts to us. and I do remember saying "yes, that's a brilliant idea: We've already posted when and where the wedding is, now let's post our home address so all the robbers can come to our house while we're away and burgle the house. Brilliant."
But, Jon, you're right, I should have at least posted that Jesse and Kristie were getting married.
By the way HI CAROL!!!! And pictures to be posted shortly on our regular website.

poor satan saturn
The A/C stopped working this last weekend and I can't figure out if it's because the system has no freon or if there's something more serious wrong. Mostly because I can't find the damn sight glass. But at least I figured out where the air compressor is. And all this time I thought that it was the alternator. I should have guessed that the tubes leading into/out of it marked R134A would have indicated that the thing was the air conditioner, not the alternator. But what can I say, I'm a girl... Never mind the fact that I used to do calculations utilizing R134A on a daily basis back in college.
Also, I need to have Transmission work done. From what I remember from the conversation with the mechanic last September: "Blah, blah, blah...transmission....blah, blah, blah... bare wires in fluid...blah blah blah...take your car to a transmission shop."
AND
The passenger side speaker is blown out. The dome light isn't really attached to the ceiling anymore, it more or less just hangs there. The fuse panel door doesn't fit over the panel any more. And the clock (part of the radio) doesn't light up when I turn on the lights because the little light is busted.
Oh yeah, and the car has started losing oil. Though it has been better since I had it at the shop last September (before I was going through an extra quart of oil every 1500 miles. Now it's more like a quart every 3000 or so miles, and hey! that's when you're supposed to get the oil changed anyhow! Woo!).
So yes, my poor little saturnmobile is starting to keel over slowly. And now the question is whether we should have it all fixed, or how big of a band-aid we should put on it before just breaking down and getting a newer car for me.

Baby Projects
But the good news is that the project I made for Baby Betsy actually looked like it was supposed to (a rabbit), and it wasn't overly difficult, and it didn't take me forever to do. Of course, I showed it to Co-Worker Matt this morning and he was like "very nice, very nice...I guess it looks sorta like an armadillo if you turn it like this." Keep in mind that to him, there are no other animals in the stuffed animal book, only the armadillo. But, Co-Worker Daniel was impressed. AND the stuffed animal is for his kid after all.
Last night was one of the loudest thunderstorms we've had down here...Poor IV was jumpin' all the time. When we went to bed she was all laying next to me and she'd wake up every time the thunder clapped. But then she'd roll over on her back and look at me and start purring. Cats are so cute when they're bein' cute...Anyhow, we're supposed to have more storms tonight...and tomorrow night...and then I think we're safe...maybe...hopefully...just no thunderstorms while we're flying in a tin can with wings okay?

Frustration
In other news, while mom and dad were in Vegas this weekend, he managed to lose his wallet. Don't worry, they found it, but still, only my dad would be able to set his wallet down on a slot machine and walk away from it...to another casino...before realizing he'd lost it. Good thing one of the Casino Lackeys was the one that found it. And this ladies and gentlemen, is why you need to go to sleep while you're in Vegas. :)
