Critter

A few weeks ago, our friend's wife delivered a healthy baby boy. Jesse (the husband/father/best man at our wedding), dutifully, sent out an email to everyone letting them know about the fact that "critter" was finally here. What follows is the conversation that Shawn and I had...

Shawn: Looks like Jesse and Kristie had the baby yesterday.

Katina: Cool, what's his name?

Riley Race

ooo, they went with the superhero name.

:::I sign into facebook to see photos:::

Dork. The baby's name is Owen.

Ah, that explains it.

Explains what?

The email was signed "Jesse, Kristie, and Owen", and I thought it was odd that Jesse was including the dog on the email signature instead of the baby.

The dog's name is Hendrix, remember?

Well, NOW...Okay, so Jesse and Kristie had the baby yesterday, his name is Owen Riley Race.

Fini

I'm FINALLY finished with the latest (and possibly last?) of my "projects for my friends' babies." And I'm only a year behind. for this project, I once again made cubes with 4 sides being embroidered hot-iron transfers and the 2 remaining sides being a bandanna skull and crossbones number. I, however, did not take a picture...this is mostly because I was finishing up the sewing on it as we were driving to the kid's 1-year birthday party. Because that's just how I roll.

Baby Jesus Wear

I had a coworker once who mentioned that she thought it was idiocy to give people anything other than plain onesies for their babies because onesies are something that all babies can wear all the time. Shawn took this one step further and said he didn't see a reason for onesies even. He would have the kids wearing "Baby Jesus Wear" (TM circle, C circle, whatever).

Baby Jesus Wear is created thusly:
  • go out and buy (or find, or steal, basically somehow acquire) a hand towel
  • Fold towel in half (hamburger wise)
  • cut a hole in the fold. Make sure it's big enough for baby's head to fit through. You may find cutting an X easier than estimating your kid's giant noggin.
  • Slip towel over baby's head.
  • Secure below arms (the actual plan is to use rope of some sort, but if that scares you, you can use velcro, or safety pins, or duct tape).
  • Voila! Baby Jesus Wear. Now you have an outfit that the baby can make a complete mess out of and you won't really care because it's just some old towel you had laying around. That and you always have something handy to wipe spit up/drool.
  • ADDED BONUS: Depending on how messed up the towel gets, you could have the kid wearing the same towel for years--it would go from being dress like to being more like a shirt. Then all you have to do is fashion pants of some sort. Don't worry, I'm sure this would be fashioned out of a towel or something similar as well. Possibly a pillow case.
So yes, IF we ever have kids, no need to give us any sort of clothing, a nice set of towels will do wonderfully.

haulin'

We unloaded the inlaws' moving truck yesterday. Just the 4 of us--two senior citizens, a scrawny chicken-armed Tina and the workhorse, Shawn. It was probably in the low 90's, so thank god for small favors.

Twenty-six feet long, seven feet tall, and about eight feet wide, and absolutely packed to the gills (no, seriously, there wasn't ANY space left). And it only took about 8 hours to unload.

In other news, my sister inlaw had her baby on Saturday evening. a bouncing baby boy, weighing almost 8 lbs. This is good because a few nights ago I had a dream that the baby was a girl and I was not looking forward to returning all the clothes I bought. I can't wait to see some pictures. ;)

Shawn and I also went to our friends' wedding on Saturday. Can I just take a moment to tell everyone how glad I am that it's a three day weekend?

So much

So much has actually happened in the last week. Not to me, personally, but big things were afoot.

First on Thursday there was the whole thing with the guy and the airplane and the IRS and the the firetrucks and the weewoo, weewoo, weewoo. and the fact that at work we were glued to the TV for 2 hours straight wondering if we should even be in our building, or you know, maybe going home.

Then I spent all day Saturday reading a book.

Sunday, Shawn and I went to MaBelle's house. There are pictures somewhere of Shawn and me with the kids (MaBelle and her brother, Meegle). I will get a copy of this picture and put it on my desk next to the computer so it will confuse the hell out of people when they come to my office. It will be glorious. Also, MaBelle decided it would be fun to call Shawn "Daddy" for a bit. IF there were any plans for kids in our future, they have officially been pushed back at least 5 years.

Monday...uh, Oh yeah! I ran hills. Fun. And came to the realization with the help of some coworkers that since our interns and temps are counted as 'half a person' for budgeting reasons, it effectively makes them worth less than slaves in 1860.

Tuesday it snowed. Actual SNOW in some places even. So once again, work was a bust because a) we were watching it snow, and b) they let us out early because it was snowing. Some good pictures can be seen here

On Wednesday I talked to my mom and laughed a lot because she said email was the new hip thing in 2001. (we were talking about social networking, texting, faceyspaces, twitter, and what have you). Also we at at Moonie's Burger House on Anderson Mill at 183. I liked it. I think we shall eat there again sometime. Though maybe not on Wednesday because it was packed...because of the live music.

Yesterday was once again boring.

Today I wore a skirt. with heels. and tights. I know, hell hath frozeth over.

Yep. I'm ready for another boring week, but Restaurant Week starts on Monday. And this year they're doing LUNCHES. I may have to broaden my culinary horizons.

Valentimes

Since Shawn and I are homebodies and he is anything but romantic (yeah, I dont know how this worked out--all through high school he gave all of his girlfriends flowers all the time, then we start dating in college, and I can count on one hand how many times he's given me flowers, gah), we decided that instead of going out on Valentines, we'd cook a nice meal at home.

Now then, I'm no slouch in the kitchen, oh sure, I can be lazy, but when the occasion calls for it, I can prove that I know my way around ingredients. Back in the day, my dad, sister and I would create a 4 or 5 course meal for my mom once a year. It required planning, team work and preparation. And we only had one day to do it since the whole goal was to surprise my mom on when we were doing it (by the time we were in college though, it was pretty obvious that it would be done sometime after New Year's but before we went back to school since that was the only time that we'd all be home together with nothing to do). Usually my dad would choose the Appetizer and Soup course, I'd choose the salad, and my sister and dad would choose dessert and we'd all throw in our ideas for the main course and what sides. The only rule seemed to be that everything had to be made by us, and other than dessert it had to come from some cook book, and we couldn't repeat recipes year to year. Except for the soup. Because it was the Colorado Cache French Onion Soup. After I started dating Shawn, I was invited to dinner with his parents one night but I couldn't make it because it conflicted with our 5 course meal night. When I told my now Mom-in-law about this, she sighed and said that her kids would never do that for her (which, well duh, Christina had already moved out and Shawn is somewhat hopeless in the kitchen especially when it comes to making more than a main dish with sides). So that year, I did a 5-course meal for Shawn's parents too. Of course, because there was really only Shawn and me and I felt bad about making him do work since he didn't really care, I did tone it down--slow cooker main course, chocolate chip cookies and ice cream for dessert, French Onion Soup for the soup course, my go-to salad, and the Texas Razzpotle dip for the app.

Anyhoo, since moving to Texas, I have tried to continue doing some nice meal thing every year. So far, it has normally ended up being on Veteran's Day since I had that day off and Shawn didn't. This year I had already pre-decided not to do a nice meal (which was a good thing since I ended up babysitting Ma-belle while her baby brother was born). Instead I figured I'd once again, make Shawn help and we'd do a nice meal on MLK day or President's day.

So I was somewhat surprised when Shawn said we should do the fancy meal on Valentine's day. He had a special request--Oso Bucco. I mean it WAS the reason I got a dutch oven for christmas 2 years ago and we still haven't made it. So Oso Bucco it was.

I used the recipe from America's Test Kitchen Restaurant Favorites cook book. I typed in the shopping list on my phone, we went to the store, and i tried to pull up the list while there. It didn't work because somehow I had been signed out of my gmail account while I was filling out the shopping list so it didn't save it. Yay! buying ingredients I never use from memory! somehow I managed to remember everything. $50 later we come home and put everything away. At 3pm I start dicing. Shawn starts dishes. Just as I'm finishing dicing, Shawn's finished enough dishes so I can start cooking. For the most part, everything goes okay. The only thing i screwed up was the peeling the potato part...as in, I didn't. I don't know why this is the step I always forget. So whatever. non-peeled potato. it isn't like it will end up in the final product anyway (you fish out all the solids at the end of the cooking time and only keep the liquids and meat). The meat and vegetable filled dutch oven goes in the regular oven for 1.5 hours. During which I read my book (Catching Fire), instead of doing something useful, such as prepping the next batch of mirepoix . So the timer goes off and then I have to chop and dice like a madwoman to get everything back on schedule, and CRAP I haven't even thought of when to start the risotto! So Shawn is called in to help (which he was supposed to be doing anyhow). And is set to work smashing all the vegetables through a strainer while I make the stuffing for the Bucco and start the risotto. Ultimately Shawn starts telling me that he can't set the table because everything on it is mine (which is true), so i tell him he has to watch the risotto while I clean the table. Somehow everything manages to actually get done and finished at about the same time (other than I wanted to have some salad with the meal, which we didn't. psh, who needs green vegetables anyway?).

So, we sit down to eat and the risotto is kinda bland and then we bite into the Oso Bucco, and it's one of those things where the first couple bites are delicious...and then the next couple bites are kinda blah...and then by the end you're hoping that you can just finish because it doesn't taste good any more.

Final verdict: I think the whole going from great to 'just get this over with' was just something that was my issue since I think Shawn liked it the whole way through...maybe I had too much sugar, or something just wasn't right for me. But, we both felt that it was way too much work for the pay off. Only funny because Shawn did mashing, and stirring, while I was the one that did all the measuring and dicing and mixing and timing. Shawn even mentioned that the Oso Bucco at Trattoria Lisina was much better (which, at $50 for ingredients, it would have been cheaper to go to Trattoria Lisina), and if we ever tried this again, we would need to add more tomatoes and make the starch mashed potatoes instead of risotto. I think instead we'll go back to the chicken pot pie in the America's Test Kitchen Best Skillet Recipes, or with the Shepherd's pie in the Restaurant book. Both of those recipes also took some time, but it didn't seem to be as much time as this one took (two batches of mirepoix while the shepherd's pie only required one), and we like the flavor of those better.

Update on Baby Projects

So, by the time I wrote my last entry about the baby projects, Miss Sarah's newest addition to the family was already 5 hours old.

I told you the baby wasn't going to wait until Friday.

Baby Projects. Again

So all of the friends that have already had babies are now all on their second round. The first baby is due in 6 days (and I'm guessing that Miss Sarah isn't going to be able to make it to the actual due date seeing as how she's smaller than me, and they went and induced labor 2 days before her due date with Mya). Anyhow, I'm still working on the baby gift. It's not even that what I've chosen to do is all that difficult, it's just that I haven't been in a sewing mood. At all. I think it's got something to do with the weather--I get all into sewing when the weather starts to get colder. Of course, you'd point out that the last time when the girls all had babies, it meant that I was sewing through the summer. But I think I started the sewing when it was still cool-ish outside and just had to keep it going through the summer as opposed to this time where I started in the middle of the summer.

Plus after 2 baby gifts that required embroidery, 15 embroidered towels, 4 baby blankets, 2 stuffed animals, 2 soft books, and a Christmas stocking, I think I'm a little burned out on the sewing.

Officially

Officially I need to get my butt in gear and start working on two new baby projects. One for a baby to be born early October of this year, and one to be born in early/mid December. Thankfully I already know what I'm going to make. :)

Updates

Oh my gosh. You MUST go watch the video that Nick and/or Sarah put together for Yam! Now, then, make haste to get over there because I command it. (Though I will admit that you male types will probably watch about 1 minute and then go "this is boring. Now where's that video of the squirrel water skiing?")

(can you tell that I just finished reading The Other Boleyn Girl?)

Baby Poll

Hey, I know there are a few of you that read this blog that have babies (or have had babies...even if it was 17 years ago). Anyhow, The Ambitious Mrs. is doing a survey on her blog to compile products that parents say "When (insert name) was a baby, I couldn't live without _____." So, for you parent types, click on the link and enter your baby's (or your) favored products.

Christmas card from Calison:

Now THAT'S a story...

My cousin, Janel, gave birth to her 2nd child on Tuesday. Dorotea (doro-tay-a) was born 14 weeks premature. During an Ice Storm. At a hospital (possibly an urgent care center) that wasn't equipped to handle a such a small preemie. Ambulances/helicopters wouldn't come get her because of the ice. So two neonatal doctors drove themselves down in a personal vehicle to save her life. She made it past the critical 3 hour stage. So that's saying something. You can read about the story here.

Update

After I posted the last post about Nathan and Christina's baby, Elsie called me back to tell me they decided to change the baby's name. They, i suppose, can change the name as frequently as they want until they write it down on the birth certificate. Anyhow...she was Amelia Rose (Elsie confirmed the spelling), but is now Mya Amelia. And dammit, I can't have 2 Yams. so I shall have to come up with a new nickname...Myaam maybe...I don't know...I'll have to think about that.

I'm an aunt!!!!!

Christina had the baby this morning...at 3 this morning to be more precise. Apparently she went to the midwife's at like 1am. They never expected her to deliver within 2 hours. Also, she went the whole delivery without any pain medication. Of the people I know that are having babies, she's the first (to be so brave or to be so completely out of her mind, I'm still trying to decide). Unfortunately Nathan didn't make it down in time (he is on a project that's 3.5 hours away from where they actually live), but, what are you going to do? Christina apparently has a belligerent uterus and it said "Amelia Rose*, you get of of this uterus this instant! And no, we cannot wait until your father is here!"

Anywho....I'd post pictures except my in-laws are living in the stone age and don't have a digital camera**. Thus, I will have to wait (and you too!) until they get the photos developed and scanned in.

*I think that's how it's spelled, Elsie was so out of it she could barely remember what the name was... it sounds like it's either Amelia or Amalia--Elsie kept spelling it with the A, but kept pronouncing it like it was an E...so I guess I'll just have to wait until the email finally arrives showing how it is correctly spelled.

**They do too have a digital camera. Elsie just refuses to use it because she claims it's a cheap piece of crap. Yes, that's right, when you buy the "Buy this digital camera, get a printer for free!" deal, it's the camera that's a piece of crap instead of the printer.)

I feel like SUCH A DORK!

I went out shopping for Nathan and Christina's baby today. And I got some clothes. I got a set of pants, and I got some onesies (from different stores), along with other stuff.

I bought the onesies to go with the pants. And, because I am a dork, I bought "Newborn" size pants, and "0-3" size onesies. Now then, I know most of you that read this blog haven't had children (nor have I for that matter). But, I am here to tell you that Newborn is not the same size as 0-3. Nor do 0-3 size clothes necessarily fit wee-babies. That is, even though the size thingy says 0-3 months, what they really mean to say is "if the baby weighs less than 8 pounds at birth, you'll be waiting about 2-3 weeks before they'll fit into these clothes."

Yeah, apparently babies lose weight right after they are born and it takes approximately 2 weeks until they are at "birth weight". Who knew?

But anyhow, this pretty much means that if it were up to me to clothe this kid, it would be topless for the first 2-3 weeks of life and then bottomless for the next couple months. Aside from the fact that the baby is going to be born at the beginning of August. It probably doesn't even NEED pants for the first 2 weeks. Damn.

[Aside]: At least I try. Shawn claims that if we ever have kids, he will go out and buy some fabric for like $1.99 a yard and then go and make the kid clothes. Of course, the "making the kid clothes" really means cut out squares, hem, make head hole, hem, put on baby, tie shoelace under arms. You can probably get at least 3 outfits per yard using this technique. He refers to these clothes as "Jesus wear". Be glad I didn't let him make any of these tunics for the baby. [/Aside]

So, WeeBaby: I'm sorry your aunt is such a dork. I promise I'll try to get my shit together. With any luck, the stuff we got you will be there before you're born.

Baby YAM is here!

Hey all, Yam (not her real name) was born on July 3rd at about 3:30 pm (2 days before her parents anniversary). She weighs in at a whopping 7 lbs 1 oz and approximately 19 inches long. I haven't been informed of any difficulties during delivery, so I'm assuming everything went alright (aside from having labor induced), unlike Calison's delivery in which she was delivered by 'crash c-section' (you can read about that here and here).

Yam's parents have labeled this picture "Road Warrior" which I find hysterical for some reason.

Because my life is boring...

I have to blog about stories that Shawn has told me. Isn't it wonderful!?!?

So, yesterday, Gabe (whose wife is pregnant...for the third time in....2.5 years) asked Shawn and Joel for boy name ideas. The only caveats? That it had to be a biblical name, and it couldn't be the "normal" names (Matthew, David, John, Aaron, etc.). Here is a list of the names they suggested:

Caine
Lucifer
Herod
Judas
Hezekiah
Jedidiah
Ezekiel

I simply said that Shawn forgot about Mishach, Shadrach, and Abednego (who, we all know is Gumby's cousin)
